More Than Forty Years of Service
In the 1960s, Congress created the RSVP program as a way to engage older adults in sharing their experience with their communities. In 1972, the City of Cleveland Department of Health started the RSVP program in Cleveland. The program originally served adults age 60 and older and focused on engaging volunteers to help with needs in the City.
As the RSVP program grew across the country, the minimum age was lowered to 55 so more adults could participate. In 1979 the Cleveland RSVP program became an independent nonprofit organization called 'RSVP of Greater Cleveland'.
In 1997, RSVP of Greater Cleveland started the Seniors for Schools program to provide volunteer tutors to serve children in Cleveland schools. This initiative became the Cleveland chapter of the national AARP Foundation Experience Corps tutoring program. The program continues and now provides literacy tutoring to 1000 Cleveland school students each year.
A volunteer theatre troupe- The Players- was formed to educate and entertain audiences. And at the request of the Cleveland Schools, we created a volunteer mentoring program- My Mentor My Friend- to support students in grades 4-8.
In order to meet increasing requests for volunteer help from local nonprofit organizations and requests from younger volunteers for assistance, we expanded our services to all of Cuyahoga County and started working with volunteers age 18 and older. We also changed our name to Greater Cleveland Volunteers.
Today, Greater Cleveland Volunteers continues to manage the Cleveland chapter of the national RSVP program for older adults and we are proud of our history with this national service program. Over the past 40+ years, we have grown and expanded to meet the changing needs in our community and the interests of the volunteers we engage in service.
Please help support Greater Cleveland Volunteers to continue our history of serving.
